Self-Expression

We've tried to mindfully let our kids have as much control over aspects of their lives as possible. Caleb and I decided early on that we would allow them self-determination for their hair styles with the hopes that they would be comfortable with self-expression and confident with their choices.

It was a little challenging to let them choose their hair styles. People would make unkind comments about Aidan looking like a girl with long hair. Other people would look sideways at the dye job Alafair had chosen for her hair. Aidan did look like a girl, and some of those dye jobs were rough. I think because we weren't bothered they weren't bothered.

It took several years for us to know if that actually mattered to either of our kids, but we can see it now. They are confident and they embrace the aspects of themselves that are different. I'm happy they started learning to be comfortable with their self-expression at a young age.
