Civilization Lessons
I've been thinking about when I was a child, and I would play the old computer game Civilization. I was completely focused on building a fabulous throne room. Nothing else mattered than turning that cold, dark cave into something glittering and fabulous. I completely missed the entire point of the game: I literally did nothing important to make a civilization thrive.
I didn't realize it until now, but Civilization was a nice little playground for my psychological development. When I was young, I quickly lost interest in that game, because I didn't understand the intricacies of building foundations that have substance. That's a surprising little life lesson that was built within me, because, now, I am all about foundational work.
I do love the glitz and glamor of the material world, but I have developed so that it's not what's most important. The rules of Civilization apply to building my health. They apply to building my family. They extend to building my careers.
